A customer in the UK Automotive sector manufactured a safety critical engine component. The material content accounted for 40% of the total cost of manufacture, an untenable figure in this highly competitive market. Hillfoot Stockholding, in conjunction with one of our steelmaking partners, developed a commercial grade steel refined properties that was significantly cheaper than the incumbent re-melted steel grade. This move saved the customer 50% of their raw material costs, thus regaining their competitive position against some aggressive competition. We were also able to hold this dedicated stock in Sheffield, allowing us to offer a KanBan supply regime reducing inventory levels for the customer and providing them with yet more cost savings.
